The Florida Keys have some of the best weather to be found anywhere, including the summer months. The highest temperature ever in Key West was 97 F (36 C), set in 1880. The highest average temperature during the summer peak is 89 F (32 C). It's because the Keys are a chain of small islands stretching out into the surrounding ocean without large urban areas being heated by the sweltering summer sun. Our temperatures come from the cooler ocean water and sea breezes so we're comfortable even in summer and warm in the winter thanks to the Gulf Stream that flows past our shores.
The Keys are a popular summer destination on the weekends for southern Floridians. Our summer ocean temperatures are in the mid-80s (30 C) a great temperature for swimming, snorkeling or diving. In winter the weather is even better, we never get frosts. That's the reason we have so many tropical plants and animals species that are native here. The all-time record low for Key West was 41 F (5 C) set in 1981. But temperatures like those only last for a few days as cold fronts pass by so year round we can comfortably sail, snorkel, fish, or swim.
Winter is our dry season and it almost never rains. Starting in May we'll begin to see some tropical showers. Rather than being dreary all day long storms these showers usually last less than an hour and are like natural air conditioners cooling the air off. In fact most of the time it's sunny while it's raining! Check out the rainbow photo we recently took on this page, a great example of a typical sunny shower.
As everyone is aware of the official hurricane season begins June 1st and ends on November 30. We constantly monitor hurricane forecasts and weather data even while we are sailing especially during the peak period for storms between Aug. 15 and Oct. 15. We have some our best weather during this time of year and we're sailing but we understand the risk of a trip being canceled so we've created a discount policy. If you book a vacation during this period and your trip is canceled or interrupted by a named storm we'll give you full credit on your deposit and a 20% discount on the rescheduled trip and if you can't reschedule within 60 days we'll refund your deposit and you can still use the discount on your next vacation.
